Air conditioning – what are your options?
There are two main categories of air conditioners: single units and split systems.
Single unit

In a single unit – also known as a wall or window system – all the parts of the unit are contained in a single box.
This is the most affordable option, but it’s more noisy than split systems and, as you can see in the photo on the right, it’s rather large.
Split Systems
The “split” in the name refers to the two components of the system: one or more air outlets inside and the unit that processes the air outside.

This category is made up of several sub-categories. In its simplest form, it’s referred to only as a “split system”, which consists of one indoor and one outdoor or unit.
You can see an example of the indoor unit of a split system we’ve installed in the picture on the right.

This is generally the best option for homes and small offices.
Other split systems
More costly examples of air conditioning in the broad category of split systems include:
Multi-head split system
Several indoor units attached to one outdoor system.
Cassette unit
Generally more suited to offices and businesses, designed to pull a heavier load. Generally installed on the roof or in the ceiling.
Ducted system
This system consists of an outdoor unit and a centrally controlled indoor unit, from which ducts lead to different areas of the space.
